10 Fun Facts About Wine

1. An Italian study argues that women who drink two glasses of wine a day have better sex than those who don’t drink at all.

2. Red wines are red because fermentation extracts color from the grape skins. White wines are not fermented with the skins present.

3. California, New York, and Florida lead the United States in wine consumption.

4. Romans discovered that mixing lead with wine not only helped preserve wine, but also gave it a sweet taste and succulent texture. Chronic lead poisoning has often been cited as one of the causes of the decline of Rome.

5. It is traditional to first serve lighter wines and then move to heavier wines throughout a meal. Additionally, white wine should be served before red, younger wine before older, and dry wine before sweet.

6.The vintage year isn’t necessarily the year wine is bottled, because some wines may not be bottled the same year the grapes are picked. Typically, a vintage wine is a product of a single year’s harvest. A non-vintage wine is a blend of wines from two or more years.

7. There is a right and wrong way to hold a wine glass. Wine glasses should always be held by the stem and not the bowl because the heat of the hand will raise the temperature of the wine.

8. Women are more susceptible to the effects of wine than men partly because they have less of an enzyme in the lining of the stomach that is needed to metabolize alcohol efficiently.

9. The combination of soil type, climate, degree of slope, and exposure to the sun constitutes the terroir of a vineyard and what makes each vineyard and each wine unique.

10. A standard glass of dry red or white wine contains around 110 calories. Sweeter wine has more calories.

Lip Locked

Yesterday was dreary in Lawrence. Rain, rain, rain, ugh go away. Today, well today the sun seems to be peeping shyly around the clouds, there may be hope yet. So what's best for a gray day besides a raincoat and umbrella? Lipstick! Bright lipstick to brighten your face if not the day! It's not just for special occasions or costume/date parties, it's for whenever. We mean whenever! Lately, our vote goes to barely there make-up and bright pink lipstick. Just, try it on.

Design to Inspire

Interior design junkies, Jo and Kim created the website, Design to Inspire. And they do just that, inspire! However, they do so way across the world from one another. Jo is Australian and Kim is Canadian, but despite the distance the two share a love for design and a knack for covering only the best of the best from designers and decorators, to architects, photographers and stylists. Jo and Kim make up the perfect design savvy duo, this week featuring Barcelona based photographer, Jordi Canosa. Canosa's work includes beautiful photographs of rustic villas and modern lofts, organically inspired. We loved his photos so much we had to post them! We promise you'll like them too, and make sure to check out designtoinspire.net- especially if you're planning on graduating here in the next four days (Ah!) and getting your own place!

Givenchy's New Face

Aside from the typical model, Riccardo Tisci (Givenchy house designer), steered clear from choosing models based on the traditional standards. Instead Tisci took on a unique approach for finding a new face, selecting new model, T. Lea. T. Lea, his transgender and longtime assistant to become part of the Givenchy inspiration. The choice aimed at casting new light on a more masculine-feminine dichotomy for the Fall line. I believe his signature collection embraces the untamed designer in everyone. I am constantly impressed by what crazy ideas designers come up with, and the direction in which they choose to go. From extreme ad campaigns, to making wild imagination a reality, I love fashion.

To Few the Mornings Be

I spoke Mary-words

Into my pillow

They began to drool

Into fragments,

Almost sentences that made sense.

Morning fatigue scratched off

Day lurched and pressed forward

Sleep who was jealously mad

Gave permission a slip

Sunday afternoon greened too,

Offering a flower

I threw it on the ground

And felt my cheeks go rosy.

Day dandelions before Moon wags its silver tail,

And I only wish

I knew which

To wish on

Getting Intimate with James Macari

I've fallen in love. I've fallen in love with James Macari, his vision, his photos, his art. Born a Dallas Texas native in 1974, Macari went on to study photography at OU before moving to New York to pursue his art. He has a knack for intimately connecting the camera with his subject- capturing sexy, steamy, beautiful photos. I'll let his work speak for itself, but if you're hankering for more Macari, I strongly suggest checking out his website at www.jamesmacari.com.
